The following excerpts are from articles which demonstrate just a few of the many types of techniques utilized at Creative Counseling Trauma Center:

On the use of the sand table in play therapy...

"Children love to play in the sand, as they not only enjoy the toys involved, but also the sensory experience of touching the sand. Children often remark about how nice the sand feels and how it is much colder than expected. The simple act of raking their hands through the sand or playing with a funnel in the sand appears to calm children." (Play Therapy Magazine, Play Therapy at an Emergency Homeless Shelter, Volume 9, Issue 2, June 2014)

Games and therapy....

"Games add an element to play not observed in free play. Demands are placed on the child's cognitive abilities, and social and emotional competence skills are available for observation and therapeutic input. Games are a natural bridge to interactions between a child and adult. Games......can provide a safe space for clients to share their thoughts and feelings. " (Play Therapy Magazine, The Use of Games in Play Therapy, Volume 7, Issue 3, September 2012)

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)....

"The client calls to mind the disturbing issue or event, what was seen, what was felt, heard, thought, etc., and what thoughts or beliefs are currently held about that event. The therapist facilitates the directional movement of the eyes or other dual attention stimulation of the brain, while the client focuses on the disturbing material, and the client just notices whatever comes to mind without making any effort to control direction or content. Each person will process information uniquely, based on personal experiences and values. Sets of eye movements are continued until the memory becomes less disturbing and is associated with positive thoughts and beliefs about one's self; for example, "I did the best I could." During EMDR, the client may experience intense emotions, but by the end of the session, most people report a great reduction in the level of disturbance." (What Is EMDR?, a pamphelet published by EMDR International Association)

Meet the newest member of our team........

Say hello to Buddy, Creative Counseling's very own Emotional Support Animal (ESA). Buddy was brought on board in January 2017 in an effort to expand the various types of therapies Creative Counseling provides. As you can see, client response has been overwhelmingly positive! But why include an ESA as part of therapy? What are the benefits?

According to research published in Advances in Mind-Body Medicine journal: "Animal- assisted therapy (AAT) has been shown to be effective in the treatment of many psychological disorders, including autism spectrum disorders, depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). AAT can be used as an adjunct to other forms of psychotherapy." When used as part of a mental health treatment plan, ESAs are shown to increase an individual's sense of comfort and safety, increase motivation, enhance self-esteem, increase pro-social behaviors and decrease behavioral problems.
